Custom Alcove Cabinets and Media Unit for a Period Home in London

Client Recommendation and Initial Consultation

Harry was introduced to McMullen Interiors through a referral from a previous client who had alcove units built by us. He admired the work and contacted us for a custom solution for his turn-of-the-century home. During our initial consultation, I visited Harry’s home to assess the space and understand his requirements for bespoke alcove units.

Understanding the Client’s Vision

Harry's home had wide alcoves, and he wanted a design that not only provided ample storage but also allowed for mounting a TV bracket above the cabinets. He specifically needed a solid back on the upper cabinets to support a swinging TV bracket, as well as space for cable management behind the unit. Additionally, Harry desired a layout that maintained the symmetry of the room, despite the alcoves being wider than typical designs.

Custom Design and Technical Solutions

To address Harry's needs, we designed a custom three-door unit for each alcove. However, Harry was concerned about the lack of symmetry with three doors, so we adjusted the design by incorporating three central drawers and two outer doors, restoring balance while also maximizing storage.

The design was further enhanced with ogee moulding on the door panels to echo the period features of his home, and we carried the same detail into the crown moulding. We also added three fluted strips on either side of the cabinets, which framed the furniture beautifully, adding a classic touch that matched the home’s character.
