Initial Bespoke Media Unit Ideas
Lucile approached McMullen Interiors to design a bespoke media unit for her new-build, modern home in London. After reviewing her initial sketch and ideas, we engaged in a detailed client consultation. Lucile wanted the unit to reflect the clean lines and minimalist aesthetic of her home, and she had considered other providers but was not satisfied with their pricing or finishes. She needed a design that seamlessly integrated into her home, while also providing practical storage and a central space for her flatscreen TV.
Understanding the Client’s Vision and Space
During the consultation, we discussed her preferences in detail, focusing on the sleek, modern design she desired. The unit needed to accommodate a range of books and media while maintaining a handle-free, uncluttered look. Lucile wanted the unit’s finish to match the existing woodwork in her home, which had soft edges and minimal decorative mouldings.
Design Development and Technical Drawings
Following our consultation, we moved forward with the design process. We provided technical drawings to ensure the proposed layout and shelving arrangement met Lucile's expectations. This included:
- An adjustable shelving system to accommodate her collection of books.
- Precise measurements of the TV space to ensure the screen would be perfectly framed within the unit.
- Inclusion of push-to-open door catches for the lower cabinets to avoid disrupting the sleek lines with visible handles.
Lucile reviewed and approved the final design, confirming that it met her aesthetic and functional requirements.
Crafting the Media Unit in our Workshop
Once the design was approved, our team began the build in our workshop. Using high-quality materials, we crafted the unit with precision, paying attention to every detail. To ensure a seamless fit with Lucile's home, we matched the unit’s colour to the existing woodwork using the RAL number provided by her builder. This custom colour-matched finish gave the media unit a cohesive look, blending perfectly with the home's modern style.
To achieve the sleek, continuous lines Lucile wanted, we applied a soft edge to all shelves and trims, ensuring the spray-painted finish would glide over the edges smoothly and provide a durable, chip-resistant surface.
Installation and Finishing Touches
The final step was the installation of the unit, which was completed with minimal impact to Lucile’s home. Our team carefully fitted the 5-meter-wide media unit into place, ensuring the installation was seamless and precise. The biggest challenge was hiding the joints in such a large piece, but we overcame this by using Lamello P14 Clamex cam fittings, allowing us to achieve a smooth, joint-free finish.
We also took care to install the adjustable shelving system, giving Lucile the flexibility she wanted for her book collection. The push-to-open door catches on the lower cabinets completed the handle-free design, preserving the clean, modern lines.
Additional Custom Work in the Same Room
In addition to the media unit, we also crafted a bespoke banquet seating unit for the same room. Built in the same style, the seating area complemented the media unit and continued the modern aesthetic throughout the space.
Final Outcome
Lucile was delighted with the final result. The media unit not only provided the practical storage and TV space she needed, but it also became a seamless addition to her home’s modern design. From the initial consultation to the final installation, McMullen Interiors delivered a bespoke solution that was both functional and stylish.
